People and research topics

The main scientific research at the moment concerns the study the effect of thermal stress and photoperiods on fertility, the oestrus synchronization and FTAI in swine, dairy cow and buffalo. The study the interactions within the hypothalamo-hypophysial-ovarian axis throughout the female reproductive cycle in domestic animals with a particular attention to the endocrine control of follicular development in sow and cow.
The welfare of piglets during the early post-partum period.

Chemical and physico-chemical characteristics of milk from several species (bovine, caprine, ovine, equids, wild ungulates)
Effect of mineral content and distribution on rennet coagulation aptitude of milk
Effect of bedding types on the quality of milk used in Parmigiano Reggiano cheese-making
Influence of chemical and physico-chemical parameters on milk cheese yield and elaboration of cheese yield prediction formulas
Influence of genetic polymorphism of milk proteins on its chemical characteristics and processing properties
Effect of mammary gland inflamation on the quality of milk used for cheese-making

The research activity is mainly oriented to the study:
- the digestibility and nutritional value of fodder used in feeding the dairy cattle.
- the effects of oxidative stress on the performance of dairy cows
- exogenous enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics in animal feed.
- mineral and vitamin integration of the rations on the state of health of the animals.

RIGHI Federico
The study in animal production mainly concerns nutrition with particular reference to the in vitro and in vivo digestive processes of ruminants and the nutritional nutritional characteristics of the forage used in their diet. Part of the research activities are also aimed at evaluating the effects of natural food additives on health and animal productivity.

Morphological and productive characteristics of animal populations, with particular reference to those of local interest and with a reduced population size (cattle, goats, pigs, horses, and small species). The objective is the phenotypic (calculation of growth and lactation curves, calculation of allometric coefficients, evaluation of somatic measures and morphological indices, recording of reproductive efficiency, etc.) and genetic characterization of these populations, in order to obtain elements that can direct their economic use, in the context of a sustainable animal production and in relation to the valorisation of the territory.

SUMMER Andrea
Effects of cattle breed and milk protein genetic polymorphism on milk quality
Somatic cell count and milk quality
Effects of seasonal/monthly variations and heat stress on milk quality
Effects of storage conditions on physico-chemical and dairy-technological properties of milk
Mineral content and equilibria and milk quality for cheesemaking
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese characteristics
