The Biosecurity Manual of the Department of Veterinary Sciences (DVS) was drafted by the DVS Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Committee to guarantee high levels of safety and biosecurity. The manual is for the academic and support staff of the DVS and for all students of the DCVM and is intended to be a guide and a reference text on the risks and the procedures that must be adopted under different working conditions and in different working environments.

The Manual is divided into the following sections:

LABORATORIES. Describe the necessary procedures related to access, appropriate clothing, good conduct and practices; ensures the safe and proper use of all equipment in educational and research laboratories; assures respect of biosecurity measures. These procedures apply to all students and personnel accessing the laboratories in any capacity. The section includes:

  • General SOPs Laboratories 
  • Macroscopic anatomy room 
  • Multipurpose rooms 1 and 2 
  • Management of animal carcasses and viscera 
  • Management of the van used for viscera transportation
  • Regulation of access and conduct in the necropsy room

VTH. Describe the necessary procedures related to access, appropriate clothing, good conduct and practices; ensures the safe and proper use of all equipment in the VTH; assures respect of biosecurity measures. These procedures apply to all students and personnel accessing the VTH. The section includes:

  • General SOPs VTH 
  • Diagnostic imaging 
  • Animal carcasses disposal 
  • Small Animal Isolation
  • Large Animal Isolation 
  • Pharmacy 

OTHER WASTE MANAGEMENT. Protocols for collection, storage and disposal of potentially infectious, chemical and toxic waste. These procedures apply to authorized personnel associated with Departmental activities. The section includes:

  • Management of lab chemical waste
  • Management of biohazardous medical waste
